It is the rural and exburban places, the people much more likely to actually experience nature, who are the least enthusiastic about the prospect.Studd Beefpilehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16107881549774540742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2086911779531294899.post-29994031115938138802009-06-05T14:24:57.582+02:002009-06-05T14:24:57.582+02:00Aw! Often you'll use more energy getting to the store than the food used crossing the ocean. What really matters is method of transport, which is harder to find out.

The real issue is what to do when green goals directly conflict. Cars, for example, could be a lot more fuel efficient if they weren't required to have catalytic converters. Are the converters worth the cost? Something like half of all electricity generated is used to move water around. And, at least in the US, a huge amount of our farming was set up by massive government flood control projects. They'd dam the river, then offer the water and electricity from the dam for basically nothing to anyone who agreed to settle below. Farmers took advantage of this and are now entitled to no cost water and electricity. If we had anything even approaching a free market for these resources the situation would be a lot better.Studd Beefpilehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16107881549774540742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2086911779531294899.post-3198131264684461312009-03-30T05:51:00.000+02:002009-03-30T05:51:00.000+02:00You can make nuclear reactors that enrich new fuel...You can make nuclear reactors that enrich new fuel as they burn their current fuel. They're called breeder reactors, but they aren't built any more. Breeder reactors are high maintenance, and it turns out to be more cost effective to use the electricity your reactor generates to enrich fuel the traditional ways. Uranium mining is also no better than any other sort of mining, but quantities matter. A few grams of uranium can produce as much energy as several tons of coal or oil.

I maintain a rule of thumb that anyone who claims to be an environmentalist and who isn't for nuclear power is fundamentally unserious.Studd Beefpilehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16107881549774540742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2086911779531294899.post-69426425447134681822009-03-18T04:59:00.000+01:002009-03-18T04:59:00.000+01:00Fantastic! If you are passionately dedicated to proving autism is cased by vaccination, it is really easy to find "evidence" that supports your theory. Likewise, drug company scientists find it easy to prove their buddies on floor 12 are doing a good job.

Of course, there's a simple solution for this. Companies push these drugs because they've already gone through the massive FDA approval process, which takes a decade and billions of dollars. Make FDA approval optional (non approved drugs being required to have giant warning labels) and you eliminate a lot of the incentive to push old products.Studd Beefpilehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16107881549774540742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2086911779531294899.post-66725707429015042332008-08-21T12:14:00.000+02:002008-08-21T12:14:00.000+02:00@ andy:I didn't put down recycling because this wa...@ andy:

I didn't put down recycling because this was supposed to be limited to activities that cut greenhouse gas production. Unfortunately it takes more energy to recycle glass than it does to make new glass, which means generating more carbon. So which do you care about more, your carbon footprint or landfills?
